Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 will get Android 2.3 Gingerbread update later this year

This was a big surprise because we have heard severalt times that the Xperia X10 update path ended with the 2.1 update

The Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 was originally shipped with Android 1.6 and for a long time, Sony Ericsson meant that their OS tweaks was so good that no one would ever want a OS update. The OS update race turned out to be a very important factor when techies was looking for new Android handsets. Sony Ericsson was one of the worst in class to offer OS updates for their older devices so many potential buyers went for other brands.
This has now changed. Sony Ericsson is the first manufacture apart from Google itself to offer Android 2.3 Gingerbread on their new handsets. Xperia Arc, Xperia Neo, Xperia Play and Xperia Pro all have Android 2.3 pre-installed.
The official Sony Ericsson Product Blog this week announced that the first Android smartphone from Sony Ericsson will receive Gingerbread 2.3 later this year. The Xperia X10 has a decent 1GHz CPU and with added OS speed improvement, the X10 could be more responsive and less battery consuming with Gingerbread installed.
Sony Ericsson was initially not going to offer more OS updates for the Xperia X10 after the 2.1 update last year, but after working with the four new Xperia models, the engineers came up with a solution how to make the X10 run on Gingerbread as well.
The update will be available in the end of quarter 2 or begining of quarter 3 this year. Which should translate to July 2011.
